The Tohoku earthquake is officially named the Great East Japan Earthquake. It was a magnitude 9,0 undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan, with the epicenter approximately 70 km east of hte Oshika peninsula of Tohoku.
This earthquake is the most powerful known that have hit Japan, and the tsunami that came after triggered waves of up to 38 metres, that is extremely letal.
In some case these waves travelled around 10 km inland. It's obvious it has been so hard because it moved Honshu island 2,4m east.
The National Police of Japan has confirmed around 15,000 deaths and 5,500 injured and 11,000 people missing. The tsunami also caused a number of nuclear accidents (for examples some fires produced by the , and this caused the evacuation of all the people who was 20km around the Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant.
I don't know if this is so serious, but journalists are describing this like what happened in Chernobyl, and I think that's not true. Everybody is nervous, I can understand but Japan is a super developed country and they have what they need to go on and repair all the pain we caused because of Nuclear Power and the decisions of nature.
